Jokeri Light Rail in Finland

Subbiano Arezzo, Italy, October 2020 – Tesar, together with its customer Energel, will supply customized cast resin transformers for the Jokeri Light Rail project in Finland. The transformers will guarantee a reliable electrification of the new light rail line which will not only increase the number of passengers but also the quality of the service.

The Jokeri Light Rail line will be built between Itäkeskus in Helsinki and Keilaniemi in Espoo. It will replace the trunk bus line 550, the busiest line in Helsinki, because its capacity is unable to meet the growing number of passengers. Thanks to the new Jokeri Light Rail it is not only possible to transport a larger number of passengers but also the reliability of the services will be improved.

The Jokeri Light Rail project includes the planning and implementation of the light rail route and the depot. The planned length of the line is approximately 25 km, of which 16 km will be in Helsinki and the remaining 9 km in Espoo.

An important factor for a successful light rail line is a functioning electrification. For that reason, Tesar and the local company Energel will supply the most reliable cast resin transformers on the market.

Some specifications of the project:

  • 17 traction cast resin transformers 1800 kVA 20 kV ± 2 x 2,5 % / 635-635V
  • 2 auxiliary cast resin transformers 1600 kVA – 20/0,4kV
  • Designed to fulfill the requirement of 5pC during the partial discharge test
  • Delivery during 2020 and 2021
