Massive order to supply motor-drive type MDR3 to the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB)
Sissach, Switzerland, August 2021 – SBB, the largest railway operator in Switzerland, has awarded a significant public tender to R&S Rauscher & Stoecklin. The subject of the order is the supply of more than 1000 motor-drives for the operation of overhead line (OHL) switches of catenaries over the next 5 years. The contract was achieved with a newly developed motor-drive type MDR3, 3rd generation.
New requirements of the SBB were fully implemented in the development stage by innovative solution concepts of R&S Rauscher & Stoecklin. The MDR3 will deliver increased safety of railway operations with outstanding availability and low maintenance costs.
The most important characteristics of MDR3 and the benefits of using this motor-drive are:
- Outstanding reliability, which is achieved by very precise and load-independent end-positioning
- Maintenance-free design
- Low weight, only 33 kg
- Dramatically reduced intake of currents facilitating reduced cross-sections of supply wires
- High availability and safety of the catenary supply
- Reduced cost of installation by reduced cross-sections of supply wires
- Cost-effective retrofitting
- Low operational costs
The motor-drive type MDR3 is a fully suitable solution to the recently approved railway infrastructure projects globally.
R&S Rauscher & Stoecklin has numerous decades of know-how in the production of motor-drives for catenary switches. This knowledge coupled with the high flexibility of the company resulted in a product with the highest technical level. The product range for railways includes switchgears for overhead line equipment of railway systems with voltages of 3 kV AC, 15 kV AC and 25 kV AC.
